I’m starting this post just after 3:00AM. I just fed Emerson and he’s not digging going back to sleep immediately. I see him on the monitor in his crib all cutely swaddled looking around. Sometimes he’s a little too awake after our middle of the night feeding. I understand because sometimes I’m awake too. I don’t like going back to sleep until I know he’s happily sound asleep. Usually it’s within 10-15 minutes so I’ll keep you posted.
I just checked the monitor and little dude is asleep (3:20!) so back to bed I go…
It’s now 6:30AM and I just fed Emerson and put him back down to sleep (the monitor is on my phone so I can take photos of the little burrito). This post seems to have a recurring theme. This stage of the game with Emerson is really all about feeding him. Life pretty much revolves around it. We plan outings based on when Emerson fed or will need to again. He’s not yet solidly taking a bottle, but honestly it’s easier just to nurse him rather than pump.
The last two days I was home alone with the boys because my husband had work training. I survived! My boys were really kind to me though so I can’t take much credit. Sage’s naptime is 1:00PM and he’s normally up around 7:00AM so that’s a lot of hours to occupy a two-year-old. It’s easy when my husband is here and we take turns playing trains with him and reading books, or we go somewhere like the park or mall which occupies lots of time. However, the going somewhere for a while isn’t really an option when I’m home alone with both boys because Emerson is feeding every two hours. I can’t (and wouldn’t) just let Sage run around the playground while I sit on a bench nursing Emerson. He’s way too much of an adventure man to not be closely supervised. My point is that it’s just a little tougher figuring out what to do.
Yesterday I found my answer: Trader Joe’s. It is wonderfully empty there at 10:00AM on a Tuesday so even if one of my boys had a meltdown it would be ok. They have little carts for kids so Sage got to zoom around the store and I just had to make sure he didn’t crash into anything too hard. Also, there’s food! I feed him while we’re shopping and that’s fantastic all around.
I could only buy as much food that would fit in Sage’s little cart because Emerson took up my entire cart, but it was still worth the trip. I got to listen to my music on the way there and Sage didn’t object. On the way home he requested I sing “Wheels on the Bus” and “Row Your Boat” and I was so happy the trip had been a success I sang as much as he wanted. We all got out of the house and came back refreshed!
Since I’ll never remember what a typical day looks like at this stage with my boys I’m going to share it below. I think it’s fun to look back on. No day is identical, but this was yesterday:
1:40am – feed Emerson, change his diaper, feed him a little more then climb back into bed.
6:00am – feed Emerson and put him down for nap. I then get ready for the day and pump before Sage wakes up. Hubby joins me in the kitchen at 7:00am when he is done getting ready for work. Sage gets up around this time. Hear him chatting away in his crib.
7:15am- make shakes for breakfast. Get Sage ready.
8:00am- say goodbye to hubby and play with Sage until Emerson wakes up.
8:45am- feed Emerson and keep Sage occupied by giving him the iPad to watch a train alphabet video on YouTube. Decided during this time that we need an outing.
9:15am- that Trader Joes trip!
10:45am- home and Emerson is hungry. Feed Emerson and let Sage watch a little Thomas the Train on iPad so he is occupied for 20 minutes. We all sit on the couch together.
11:15am- Emerson goes down for a nap and Sage and I play play play. I also get him lunch of yogurt with berries and we share some green smoothie.
12:30pm- Emerson surprises me by waking up so he’ll be joining us while I put Sage down for nap.
12:45pm- read books to Sage and rock in his chair with him. Emerson is in the rock n’ play chilling by us. Sage goes down for a nap easily today and seems to understand I have to go take care of the baby.
1:15pm- feed Emerson and put him down for a nap. Both boys are napping! I eat, clean kitchen, and then lay down on the couch until my husband gets home at 3:00PM. We chat and start prepping dinner (yup we’ve been eating dinner at like 4:30).
3:40PM-4:30PM- feed Emerson and he’s awake for like 10 minutes and cranky. I shove some dinner in my mouth (food from the grill, yum!) and then go feed Emerson again because he is still hungry and then he goes back to sleep.
4:30-6:00PM- play with Sage. His best buddy across the street is out playing so we join them. The boys go crazy playing in the bubbles.
6:00PM- put away laundry and then feed Emerson. He’s sleepy so I put him back down for a nap and then go on a short walk with Sage who is now caked in sand.
6:45PM- bath for Sage and then bedtime routine. Emerson wakes up in the middle of this so my husband gets him and I read Sage a few books and then my husband and I switch, I take Emerson and he goes with Sage.
7:30PM- I shower and put Emerson in the rock n’ play in the bathroom with me.
8:45PM- get myself ready for bed, grab a bowl of cereal, and climb into bed. Hubby and I watch Ballers and I fall asleep during Vice Principals around 10PM.
Woah that got lengthy! I’m finishing this post at 1:30PM and I was just feeding Emerson and put him down for a nap. Thank goodness I can post from my iPhone.
How was your day?
