What a month! We are so in love with our little guy. Emerson is such a sweet baby. I really enjoyed doing these updates with Sage and especially now it’s fun to look back at life with Sage at this age and how it is with Emerson. My two babies look a lot a like at this age (picture below: Emerson top, Sage bottom), but they certainly are very different in many ways.
Likes: Emerson has spent most of the month sleeping. The first two weeks his wakeful periods were really short, but the latter two he was up a little more. Generally he had a wakeful hour or so in the morning, midday and evening now. He likes to go on walks in his stroller and is a happy guy tagging along in his carrier on errands. He’s been out and about a lot! He also likes being swaddled. Sometimes he fights it at first, but then snuggles right in. Emerson likes to eat too. A month of eating and sleeping.
Dislikes: Emerson is a very happy guy, but doesn’t like being hungry. Me either, buddy.
Sleeping: Emerson has been sleeping in his crib since night two at home. The first night I had him in the rock n’ play by our bed, but the next night he just didn’t seem happy in it. I moved him to his crib and he seemed much happier. I slept in the chair in his room that first night to be by him! This is so different from Sage who slept in the rock n’ play for months. Emerson also takes naps in his crib unless we’re out and about and then he’s in his car seat carrier. Right now Emerson’s last feeding is at 9PM. At the beginning of the month he was waking up between 12-3AM for a feeding and then again between 4-6AM. This last week he’s had several nights of just one wake up. This is all miraculous to me. I make a point to put Emerson down to sleep pleasantly awake, but sleepy unless of course he falls asleep nursing and then I just transition him to the crib and swaddle him. Sometimes he’s already asleep when I’m swaddling him and other times he takes 5-10 minutes to fall asleep. If he’s struggling after a few minutes and not settling, I’ll go in a rub his belly and say “shush” a few times. We use white noise and blackout curtains in his room. I probably should do a post on how different this all is from when Sage was this age because Sage napped on me for every nap for months and resisted his crib for months as well. Like I said, every baby is different. Also, I’m different this time too because caring for a newborn is not brand new anymore.
Eating: Emerson eats about every two hours during the day. Sometimes more often. The first week and a half I woke him at night to feed every two(ish) hours, but then his doctor gave me the ok to let him sleep. He started going 3-4 hours at night and his longest stretch has been 6 hours. I struggled a tiny bit with feeding him right as my milk came in on day three because I was in some pain, but we worked out the kinks quickly.
Playing: There hasn’t been too much play this month. Emerson spends a little time in the MamaRoo each day and we brought out a play mat a few times. Sage suddenly took a huge interest in that as soon as he knew it was for the baby. Emerson had fun on the mat and Sage demonstrated how to swat at the toys. It was short lived though and Emerson was ready for another nap. He’s really starting to observe a lot more and checking out his world. Staring at the fan above our kitchen table and in our bedroom is truly fascinating to Emerson.
Highlights: Lots of family walks on the neighborhood trails and at the mall. Emerson naps most of the time in his carrier when we’re out. He’s been to Wegmans multiple times, Target, and the playground each week (so Sage can play). We all went out for pizza on our anniversary and we’ve all been to Chipotle together. Emerson has done fantastic on our outings as long as I feed him right before we go out. He started practicing taking a bottle from daddy this week too.
