I’m really excited to share this post with you guys. I’ve never done a workout program start to finish. Sure I’ve done lots of workouts, but I’ve never stuck to a whole plan. As a kid I was a competitive figure skater (yup, from the age of 7!) and then in middle school I played field hockey, volley ball, and joined the swim team. I then went on to play field hockey in high school and college, but my heart wasn’t in it so I quit after freshman year of college. My senior year of college I fell in love with running and started training for a marathon on a whim. I’ve been back and forth with running the last six years and took time off during both my pregnancies. Well, I’m now nine weeks postpartum with my second baby, Emerson, and just finished my first round of 21 Day Fix. I’m going to share my honest review of 21 Day Fix. If you’re not familiar with the program, read this before diving into my post.
My husband asked if I’d join him for a round of 21 Day Fix and I knew it would be easier if we made the commitment together. So on a Sunday afternoon when the boys were napping we put in the dvd and jumped in. I was six weeks postpartum when I started the program. I did not follow the nutritional component. Of course I was eating healthy, but because I’m breastfeeding I’m making sure to get extra calories and eating whole plant-based foods to fuel my body. My husband is following the ketogenic diet (that’s another post I should do). My review of the program is going to focus solely on the fitness aspect. I should note though that I’m a full supporter of meal plan aspect too.
The workouts are 30 minutes which is awesome. With our toddler and newborn in the picture, it’s hard to find extra time, but 30 minutes is doable (still takes commitment though for sure). The first workout was tough, not impossible, but I definitely felt out of shape. I also felt awesome for making it through. There are modifications for every move which is very helpful for a beginner. Basically I just did what I could.
Those thirty minutes are business, but it’s just thirty minutes. Autumn, the trainer, walks you through all the moves. The workouts got easier over the days and quickly. I felt like a different person even just after the first week. I was stronger and already looking leaner. I was really surprised at the changes happening to my body. I didn’t know what to expect other than I knew I’d get a good workout, however, my expectations were certainly exceeded (and my husband’s too!). We could see the results and that is so empowering. The summer before we got married my husband was running 40 miles a week and didn’t get results like this. The other day he goes to me “look, abs!”.
I will say it was much easier climbing out of bed to get in a workout with my husband by my side. At 6am I was often still half asleep, but I certainly woke up quickly once the workout started. It was empowering getting in the workout early in the day, but there were several days a workout didn’t happen until after my husband got home from work. Emerson and Sage would join us, Sage playing with his toys and Emerson in his vibrating chair or play mat. Like I said, it took dedication to not just say “let’s skip today”.
When the 21 days were up, we were left wanting to continue on. Working hard and seeing results is inspiring. My goal is to fit back into my pre-pregnancy pants. After doing 21 Day Fix I can! They are still too snug, but progress was made! My midsection is smaller. My arms and legs are stronger. I’m starting to see definition. Also, mentally I feel great. That’s huge. My husband got fantastic results as well. He was really surprised at how much of an arm and leg workout he got and didn’t need to go to the gym. He told me the workouts were more dynamic and hit all areas of the body. I mean we just rejoined the YMCA and for the last three weeks we didn’t step foot in there because these workouts were so legit.
Following this program also made us want to eat better. The two go together. We felt good about ourselves for working hard and wanted to stay feeling that way. There was still a pizza night and other treats in there (we love food!), but overall this is the best we’ve ever eaten.
Our plan is to continue on with 21 Day Fix Extreme. I used 3 pound weights for the entire program. The program says to have a heavy and light set and I used my light set the whole time because that was enough of a challenge for me. Well, I just bought 5 pounders because I’m feeling ready for that challenge.
To sum things up, it’s a fun program. It’s hard, but so rewarding. It targets the whole body and you just need to find thirty minutes in your day. If you put in the work, you’ll 100% see results. I can only imagine how much more the results would be following the nutritional component. I should also mention I have (since having Emerson) been drinking Shakeology every day. I look foward to my morning chocolate shake. It’s just part of my morning ritual now.
I am a Beachbody Coach, but I share my thoughts because I’m excited about the changes I see in myself from following this workout program. I’m not paid to write this. I’m just happy about becoming a 21 Day Fix graduate and it’s hard not to talk about it. With all that being said, if you’re interested in giving it a try, I’d love to support you along the way.
I’ll continue to share our experience with the next program too!
